How often should I bathe my dog?

Dog Obedience Training

There is no hard and fast rule on how often you should bath your dog and most dogs usually never really require a bath. However, bathing your dog is not just good for their hygiene, it also helps to keep your dog free of dirt, provide an excellent chance to check for abnormal scratches, bumps, fleas and other abnormalities and lastly, eliminate odour.

How often your dog requires a bath can be determined by its activity level, hair length and thickness, and kind of shampoo you are using. Human skin differs significantly from a dog's skin. Hence, shampoos meant for human use should never be used on dogs. In addition, improper rinsing of shampoo residue is a common cause of skin irritations. Ensure that the shampoo is entirely rinsed.

When the bath is given too frequent than necessary, the natural oils on the dog's coat will be stripped off, causing dryness and irritation. If this happens, you should bath less often or switch to a different shampoo. That being said, bathing your dog every other week would not be considered to be excessive. When in doubt, give your dog a good sniff — How does your dog smell? If it does not smell good, it’s probably time for a bath.
