Art of playing 2 - Dog-to-dog play
Animal communication can be complicated. Ranging from physical, vocalizations, body languages etc... and dog-2-dog play is another form of communications.
"A play bow is a form of dog body language. It's a way in which dogs communicate with people and other animals."
A bow in play is contributed to a gesture of invitation to play. But growling, mouth open barring teeth, barking, biting and all over each other might not be a bad thing.
Especially for puppy who left the litter too early or lone pup syndrome, usually the pup are not properly socialize. Not knowing how to play in a proper way, they will be easily attract negativity through play. It might lead to fights.
In such situation, the human playmate become the only avenue for the pup to learn good social skills.
Rough plays will lead to aggression; redirected aggression, possessiveness, toy aggression and food aggression. You need to acquire a eye to spot real aggression from play. And having a good play routine will prevent aggression in dogs.
How do we overcome rough play? We will need to work on the following ways to minimize rough play to an acceptable level.
1. Teach the release cue,
2. Cultivate a leave it cue,
3. Teach the stay,
4. Reward on calmness,
5. Reward when he plays the correct way, &
6. Stop the play when the play grows into aggression.

Food and attention are very high in the list of wants of our dog. If we manage these resources carefully and intelligently, we can use it to train our dog and get the response we wanted.
