Do you have a switch-on key?
Do you have a turn-on or switch-on key in dog training? Is it necessary? Yes it's absolutely necessary.
Let me put it this way, how do your dog know when you require his 100% attention in training? If he does not have a clear indicator, he is unlikely to give you his best. And it's not fair for you to demand that if you have not requested.
I reckon the switch on key is like a warm up routine exercise. Every time before you go for a sprint, you will have a good 20-30 minutes warm-up. This warm up will prepare your team, body, soul and mind to do well in the sprint. Not only you can expect better result, it will also prevent injury.
Give you an example, for myself, my switch-on cue is the Name of the dog plus the Setup at heel position. If i called Benji and I didn't cue to setup, it will not be regarded as a switch on key. Benji is not require to setup thus this piece of information give him a clue what is expected of him. This is fair, we cannot expect our dog to give us 100% attention all the time.
Teaching a switch-on cue, provide the handler the ability to quickly hype up his dog and to be always ready for challenges.
