Philosophy of Dog Training

What is dog training? Dog training in essence is to educate our family pet dog on the house rules. Making sense of the black and white in all things relating to their environment, in order to understand what's ticks in life. There are 3 Phases in Dog Training; Phase 1 - Learning phase or Classical Conditioning

In this learning phase, we uses reward base techniques to associate certain valuable behaviors with treats. And after at least 30 repetitions, our dog should begin to understand the cue and the behaviors. In this phase, I will never punish or blame our dog, as it is unacceptable to demand certain behaviors when your dog is not even trains in it. Phase 2 - Demand Phase or Operant Conditioning

In this phase, we demand fluency. If you reward the behaviors with good repetition, you shouldn't be having issues at this stage. Work on the behaviors frequently and accurately. In this stage, I might increase or decrease my rate of reinforcement as I try to demand for stronger behaviors. Phase 3 - Proofing Phase or Distraction Phase

You can only start working on the proofing phase if you are recalling at least 80% of the behaviors from your dog.; 8 out of 10 demands, you are getting the desired behaviors. Proofing is allowing your dog to be expose to distraction and yet training him to give you the desire behaviors effectively. If you work well in this stage, distraction training are like opportunity for your dog to gain access to his reward zone and gets his rewards. Who says positive reinforcement training is less effective? Only trainers will no or less experience will make such statement. Dog training is getting our dog to understand what is require of him and by repeating such behaviors is a good things and valuable. Just like Didi, a 4 year old Singapore Special, has never uses his mouth on any toy. For the longest time, Didi never take interest in any toy. But after a good 6-month of training, Didi has not only gain interest in a toy, he started picking up the toy for me. 6x4 weeks equal to 24 sessions and Didi manages to learn one of the difficult exercise, the exercise of retrieve. In 24 sessions, from a non toy motivated dog to a dog that retrieve the toy at will, is a great achievement. Didi went through the 3 phases in training and with good repetitions and precise reinforcement, Didi now retrieve like a pro.

The next challenge for Didi is proofing and generalization, making the retrieve behaviors at all environment and by demand at anytime. Positive Dog Training ROCK!
