My dog doesn't response to me if I have no food in my hand?
Before we dive deep into this training plateau, I would like to bring your attention to what make your dog's tick? This is an EXPECTATION MISMATCH! The ideal world of human understanding versus the ideal world of dog!
In the ideal world of human understanding; the human will often says to himself, since I bought and/or adopted you (the dog), I provide you with food, water and shelter, you jolly well listen to me, if not, I will disown or give away the dog. But in the ideal world of dog; given the doggy instincts, they will be searching for food, water, shelter and breeding as their utmost importance. Responding to owner are the lest importance since they will still get their food, water and shelter freely.
So in the IDEAL WORLD of Dogs, owners need to find out what make their dog's tick. And by managing the food, water and shelter, it will transform your doggy into a REAL CHAMPION!
Why is your dog not responding to you when you are not holding food or treats? The reason is simple, your dog can tell that this time you have nothing valuable for him, so there's no motivation to respond to you! Is this possible? Yes! This is because we have taught our dog well to read our body language as cues to predict the outcomes. Just like Calculator Salesman; in the past, we sold calculator like nobody business until some smart-alex tries to sell calculator by the number of digits and now consumers buys calculators by the most available digits in the calculator.
In dog training, you realize the following issues are just commons;
1. We quench our fist if we have food in our hand,
2. Tone use is more gentle,
3. Reward our dog only when you have food in your hand,
4. Show the food or treats to the dog before getting them to do something and
5. Luring with food in training.
All the above are common training issue, very often it provides our dog the common pattern to learn how we stereo-type human operates. If we can be awared of the pre-cues or the common training down falls, we will definitely be a relatively good trainers.
