One way to start building behaviour is using a simple exercise called the 300 peck pigeon. (Often also called 1000 pigeon pecks, 300 pecking pigeon, or some other variation.) The name refers to a procedure early behaviour analysts used for teaching a pigeon to peck a target hundreds of times.
300 peck systems provides a continuous reinforcement for your dog to keep looking forward to build a strong behaviour. In the example of the Loose Leash Walking, 300 Pecks, set a great routine, maintain the routine and form the SOLID routine or BEHAVIOUR.
We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.
– Aristotle quotes
Chinese Translation:
我们是我们重复做的事情。所以优秀不是一个行为,而是一个习惯。
– 亚里士多德
The sample routine will be something like this ...
ONE
Start at the sit on your left, set-off with one foot
Sit C/T, set-off C/T and repeat
TWO
Sit on your left, set-off one, two foot
Sit C/T, Set-off One foot C/T, Two Foot C/T and repeat
THREE
Sit on your left, set-off one, two, three foot and stop
Sit C/T, Set-off One foot C/T, Two foot C/T and Three foot C/T and Stop C/T and repeat
FOUR
Sit on your left, set-off one, two, three foot, stop and about-turn
Sit C/T, Set-off One foot C/T, Two foot C/T, Three foot C/T, Stop C/T and About-turn C/T and repeat
FIVE
Sit on your left, set-off one, two, three foot, stop, about-turn and set-off one foot
Sit C/T, Set-off One foot C/T, Two foot C/T, Three foot C/T, Stop C/T, About-turn C/T and set-off One foot and repeat
SIX and ON and ON till ONE HUNDRED
As you build to many steps, you can start changing up the steps. You can try going in Circle, Square, Oval etc ...
I do firmly believe, if we do a particular behaviour for ONE HUNDRED times, the BEHAVIOUR will be a GOOD HABIT!
Have fun, stay safe and be positive.
Cheers
